At Home Pet Euthanasia
Frequently Asked Questions
-
It's the question I'm asked most often, and I know how painful it can be to face. As both a vet and an animal lover, I've seen how difficult it is to balance love, hope, and concern for your pet's comfort. My Quality-of-Life Consultations are designed to gently guide you through this stage, offering support, practical advice, and clarity about what signs to look for, what comfort measures can help, and how to recognise when the time may be approaching, helping you feel more confident and at peace with your decision.
-
Many of us wish for our pets to simply fall asleep peacefully at home and not wake up, and I completely understand that hope. Sadly, this kind of natural passing is quite rare, especially for elderly or chronically ill pets, who often experience discomfort before death. The kindest gift we can offer them is a planned, peaceful goodbye that feels as close to that wish as possible.
During a home euthanasia, your pet is first given a gentle sedative that helps them drift into a deep, calm sleep. Once they are fully relaxed and unaware of their surroundings, the final injection is given, passing gently in their sleep.
-
Because the visit takes place at home rather than in a busy practice, there's no rush. I can take as much time as you and your pet need, sometimes half an hour, sometimes longer. Every goodbye is unique, and I always aim to make the experience as gentle and personal as possible, guided by your pet's comfort and your family's wishes.
Before anything begins, I'll explain each step and answer any questions you may have. A gentle sedative is given first, helping your pet relax and drift into a peaceful sleep over about 10–15 minutes. Once they are completely calm and unaware, the final injection is given, allowing them to pass quietly and peacefully.
Every member of the family, including children, is supported with sensitivity and compassion throughout the experience.
-
Your pet will not feel any pain, fear, or distress. Being at home helps them stay calm and relaxed. The gentle sedative is given as a small injection under the skin and is rarely even noticed. Within minutes, your pet will be free from discomfort and peacefully at ease.
-
Anyone you wish. Family members, close friends, or other pets may be present if it brings comfort. The experience is deeply personal, and you can choose what feels best for you and your pet.
We encourage everyone who has been important in your pet's life to be present for this special farewell. While it is naturally a tender moment, I also hope it can be a quiet celebration of your pet's life, a chance to honour the joy, love, and companionship they have given.
-
Being fully mobile allows me to provide this special moment in the comfort of your own home, where your pet feels safest. Whether on a favourite bed or sofa, or wrapped in the arms of loved ones, your companion can rest peacefully in familiar surroundings. Our aim is to make this final goodbye gentle, calm, and filled with care, creating a tender memory for everyone.
-
Always, a gentle sedative is given first to help your pet relax and drift peacefully into sleep. Unlike in a busy practice, I take the time needed to ensure this final goodbye is calm, unhurried, and as comfortable as possible. Every moment is guided by your pet's needs, making sure the timing is right, never rushed, never forced, so that the experience is gentle, dignified, and memorable.

Pet euthanasia is designed to be a calm and peaceful process. Lucia ensures every step is gentle and stress-free, including offering sedation beforehand and allowing family members plenty of time with your pet.
In-home euthanasia allows your pet to remain in the place they feel safest, avoiding the stress of traveling to a practice.
Kindly be aware that in some situations, if a pet is very weak or unwell, it may be necessary to proceed without the usual sedation. This is because sedation can sometimes lower blood pressure too much, making it difficult to access a vein. In these cases, alternative injection methods may be used, which can be a safer and more comfortable option once your pet is fully relaxed. Lucia will always explain any adjustments in advance, so you know what to expect.
-
After your pet has passed, I offer several aftercare options to suit your wishes. If you'd like to bury your pet at home or manage cremation arrangements yourself, Lucia can leave your pet in your care. Alternatively, she can transport your pet for cremation.
For pets over 20kg, some assistance may be needed to move them safely; extra help can be arranged if required (additional charges may apply).
Individual cremation allows your pet's ashes to be returned, with choices for scattering, a casket, an urn, or a keepsake memorial. Shared cremation is also available if you prefer not to receive the ashes.
There are also options for fur clipping and paper or foam pawprints to help you remember your pet in a special way.

Payment for our services is taken at the time of booking via bank transfer or same day before procedure if paid by cash.

Absolutely. A free consultation is a no-pressure phone call with Lucia, our independent vet. It's your chance to discuss your pet's health and end-of-life care options, ask any questions that worry you, and understand what the euthanasia process involves: from costs to aftercare to what to expect on the day. The goal is simple: to help you feel informed, supported, and confident in making the right choice for your beloved pet. There's no obligation, no pressure, and no fee.
